Beta-defensins (also designated BDs, or hBDs in human) are small cationic peptides with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against enveloped viruses, fungi, and bacteria. They are produced in mucosal epithelia and neutrophils of several species and are developmentally regulated.
The beta-defensin family shares a common defensin motif characterized by multiple cysteine residues and a conserved tertiary structure.
Besides their role in host immune defense, many beta-defensins are also involved in sperm maturation and capacitation.
Beta-defensin 32 (DEFB132) is a 95 amino acid secreted protein that likely contains a signal peptide requiring cleavage by proteolytic enzymes for activation.
