Target Information
The HFE gene encodes a membrane protein similar to MHC class I-type proteins that associates with beta2-microglobulin. This protein regulates iron absorption by modulating the interaction between the transferrin receptor and transferrin. Mutations in this gene cause hereditary haemochromatosis, a recessive genetic disorder characterized by excessive iron storage. Multiple alternatively spliced variants have been identified.
