ETV4 (E1A enhancer binding protein, E1AF)
Also known as PEA3, ETV4 belongs to the Ets gene family encoding sequence-specific DNA binding proteins. Members include PU.1, Ets-1, Ets-2, E74, and GABP-α.
All Ets proteins recognize a central 5'-GGAA-3' DNA motif but differ in flanking sequence specificity. PEA3 binds 5'-AGGAAG-3' but not 5'-AGGAAC-3', which is recognized by PU.1.
ETV4 is expressed in epithelial and fibroblastic cells, contrasting with other Ets family members (Ets-1, Ets-2, Fli-1) that are mainly expressed in hematopoietic cells.
