Target Information
MUC1 (Mucin 1, Episialin, MAM-6, CA 15-3, PEM, EMA) is a large cell surface mucin glycoprotein expressed by most glandular and ductal epithelial cells and some hematopoietic lineages. It is a transmembrane glycoprotein with a large extracellular domain containing numerous O-linked glycans. MUC1 is highly polymorphic, with allelic variations leading to different repeat numbers (30–90) and molecular weights. It is abundantly expressed in over 90% of breast carcinomas and metastases.
Transgenic MUC1 associates with all four cebB receptors and localizes with erbB1 (EGFR) in lactating glands. The MUC1 gene has seven exons and multiple alternatively spliced variants. Overexpression, aberrant localization, and altered glycosylation are linked to carcinomas.
