Target Information

Transferrins (Tf) are approximately 80 kDa blood plasma glycoproteins synthesized by the liver. They are iron-binding transport proteins capable of binding two Fe(3+) ions in association with an anion, usually bicarbonate. Transferrin is responsible for transporting iron from absorption and heme degradation sites to storage and utilization areas. It is the primary blood iron transport protein, and under normal conditions, about one-third of total blood transferrin contains bound iron. Measurement of transferrin levels can indicate blood iron-carrying capacity and abnormalities of iron metabolism such as anemia, iron overload, and hemochromatosis. Serum transferrin may also play a role in stimulating cell proliferation.
