Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the keratin gene family. Type II cytokeratins are basic or neutral proteins that form heterotypic pairs during differentiation of epithelial tissues. This cytokeratin is expressed in the basal layer of the epidermis along with KRT14. Mutations in these genes are associated with epidermolysis bullosa simplex. Type II cytokeratins are clustered in chromosome region 12q12–q13.
