Target Information

This gene encodes a protein that interacts with the N-terminal region of BRCA1. It shares homology with conserved regions of BRCA1, including the N-terminal RING motif and C-terminal BRCT domain. The RING motif is a cysteine-rich sequence found in proteins regulating cell growth, including tumor suppressor and proto-oncogene products. This protein also contains three tandem ankyrin repeats. The BARD1/BRCA1 interaction is disrupted by tumorigenic amino acid substitutions in BRCA1, suggesting that a stable complex between these proteins is critical for BRCA1 tumor suppression. It may be a target of oncogenic mutations in breast or ovarian cancer.
