Target Information
Olfactory receptors interact with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate neuronal responses that trigger the perception of smell. These proteins belong to the large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) arising from single coding-exon genes. Olfactory receptors share a 7-transmembrane domain structure common to many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and are responsible for odorant recognition and signal transduction. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the genome. Nomenclature for olfactory receptor genes and proteins is organism-specific.
