Target Information
Olfactory receptors interact with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate a neuronal response that triggers the perception of smell. These receptors are members of the large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) derived from single coding-exon genes. Olfactory receptors share a seven-transmembrane domain structure common to many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and are responsible for odorant signal recognition and G protein-mediated transduction. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the human genome. The nomenclature assigned to olfactory receptor genes and proteins is organism-specific.
