Target Information
The cytochrome c oxidase (COX) family of proteins functions as the final electron donor in the respiratory chain, driving a proton gradient across the inner mitochondrial membrane to produce water and ATP.
The mammalian COX apoenzyme is a dimer, each monomer consisting of 13 subunits, both mitochondrial and nuclear.
COX8 subunits are nuclear and exist as three isoforms:
- COX8a: liver and heart isoform
- COX8b: heart-specific isoform
- COX8c: expression pattern not fully elucidated
All three isoforms are components of the COX complex and play a crucial role in electron transport.
This protein is one of the nuclear-coded polypeptide chains of cytochrome c oxidase, the terminal oxidase in mitochondrial electron transport.
