Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, found in both keratinizing tissues (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing cells (e.g., mesothelial cells). At least 20 different CKs are identified, classified as type I (acidic polypeptides) or type II (basic polypeptides).
Keratin 14 belongs to the type I subfamily of low molecular weight keratins and pairs with keratin 5. It distinguishes stratified epithelial cells from simple epithelial cells and is useful for identifying squamous cell carcinomas. It also serves as a prognostic marker in breast carcinomas.
At least one member of the acidic family and one of the basic family is expressed in all epithelial cells.
