Target Information
Chromosome 20 represents about 2% of human DNA, consisting of approximately 63 million bases and 600 genes. It includes regions with genes expressed in the epididymis, important for seminal production and potential targets for male contraception. The PRNP gene encoding the prion protein associated with spongiform encephalopathies such as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is located on chromosome 20. Disorders including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, spinal muscular atrophy, ring chromosome 20 epilepsy syndrome, and Alagille syndrome are also linked to chromosome 20. The C20orf78 gene product has been provisionally designated C20orf78 pending further characterization.
