Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to a highly conserved cAMP-regulated phosphoprotein (ARPP) family.
This protein acts as an endogenous ligand for the sulfonylurea receptor (ABCC8/SUR1), the regulatory subunit of ATP-sensitive potassium (KATP) channels located on pancreatic beta cell membranes.
It plays a key role in insulin release regulation and may serve as an endogenous regulator of KATP channels.
In vitro studies indicate modulation of insulin secretion via KATP channel interaction, and the gene is proposed as a candidate for type 2 diabetes.
At least eight alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been identified.
