Target Information

Cholesterol transporter that mediates non-vesicular transport of cholesterol from the plasma membrane (PM) to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). Contains unique domains for binding cholesterol and the PM, serving as a molecular bridge for cholesterol transfer from PM to ER. Plays a crucial role in cholesterol homeostasis and localizes to PM or ER depending on membrane cholesterol levels. In lipid-poor conditions, localizes to the ER membrane; under excess cholesterol, recruited to ER–PM contact sites (EPCS) mediated by the GRAM domain. The VASt/ASTER domain binds PM cholesterol to facilitate transfer to ER. May play a role in tumor progression and autophagy regulation, required for autophagosome biogenesis.
