Target Information
Alpha Tubulin is part of a heterodimer consisting of alpha and beta tubulin subunits. Both subunits (~55 kDa) are homologous but not identical. The alpha-beta tubulin heterodimer forms the basic building block of microtubules, cylindrical filamentous structures found in nearly all eukaryotic cells.
Microtubules provide structural support, serve as intracellular transport pathways, and play a key role in mitosis. Gamma tubulin is critical for microtubule nucleation. Multiple alpha and beta tubulin genes are highly conserved among species, with the alpha tubulin gene showing strong similarity to the mouse and rat Tuba1 gene. Northern blot studies indicate expression predominantly in morphologically differentiated neurologic cells.
