Target Information
The TAS2R4 gene encodes a member of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily, specifically expressed in taste receptor cells of the tongue and palate epithelia. This intronless gene encodes a 7-transmembrane receptor protein functioning as a bitter taste receptor.
It is clustered with three other candidate taste receptor genes on chromosome 7 and is genetically linked to loci influencing bitter perception. TAS2R4 acts as a gustducin-coupled receptor for denatonium and N(6)-propyl-2-thiouracil, mediating perception of bitter compounds in the oral cavity and gastrointestinal tract.
The receptor signals through PLCB2 and TRPM5, and is expressed in gustducin-positive taste receptor cells.
