Target Information
The XPA (xeroderma pigmentosum group A) protein specifically recognizes UV- or chemically damaged DNA lesions and triggers the nucleotide excision repair process.
XPA binds to replication protein A (RPA) or excision repair cross-complementing 1 protein (ERCC1).
In the absence of nucleotide excision repair, persisting unrepaired DNA lesions may lead to accumulation of gene mutations and ultimately cancer.
Xeroderma pigmentosum patients have a >2000-fold increased risk of developing skin cancer in sun-exposed areas.
