Target Information
Glutathione plays a key role in protecting cells from oxidative damage by free radicals, detoxifying xenobiotics, and facilitating membrane transport. The GSS protein functions as a homodimer and catalyzes the ATP-dependent conversion of gamma-L-glutamyl-L-cysteine to glutathione, the second step in glutathione biosynthesis. Mutations in this gene can lead to glutathione synthetase deficiency.
