Background
This gene encodes a multifunctional proinflammatory cytokine that belongs to the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) superfamily. It is mainly secreted by macrophages and functions through receptors TNFRSF1A/TNFR1 and TNFRSF1B/TNFBR. TNF-α regulates cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, lipid metabolism, and coagulation. It is implicated in autoimmune diseases, insulin resistance, and cancer. Mouse knockout studies suggest its neuroprotective function. (RefSeq, Jul 2008)
