Background
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the STAT family of transcription factors. Upon cytokine or growth factor stimulation, STAT proteins are phosphorylated by receptor-associated kinases, form homo- or heterodimers, and translocate to the nucleus to act as transcription activators. STAT5A mediates responses to multiple ligands, including IL2, IL3, IL7, GM-CSF, erythropoietin, thrombopoietin, and various growth hormones. Constitutive activation of STAT5A, such as through TEL/JAK2 fusion, is linked to tumorigenesis in myeloma and lymphoma. In mice, STAT5A induces BCL2L1/BCL-X(L) expression, suggesting an anti-apoptotic role. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been identified.
