Background
This gene encodes a ubiquitous nuclear protein that stimulates both cell proliferation and differentiation. It belongs to the MADS-box superfamily of transcription factors and binds to the serum response element (SRE) in target gene promoters. SRF regulates immediate-early genes such as c-fos, participating in cell cycle regulation, apoptosis, growth, and differentiation. It acts downstream of multiple pathways, including the MAPK pathway via ternary complex factors (TCFs). Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified (RefSeq, May 2014).
