Background
Ribosomes are organelles that catalyze protein synthesis and consist of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit. These subunits are composed of 4 RNA species and approximately 80 structurally distinct proteins. The RPS9 gene encodes a ribosomal protein that is a component of the 40S subunit and belongs to the S4P family. It is localized in the cytoplasm and has been observed to show variable expression in colorectal cancers compared to adjacent normal tissues, although no correlation with disease severity has been found. Multiple processed pseudogenes derived from this gene are dispersed throughout the genome. (RefSeq, Jul 2008)
