Background

Ribosomes are organelles that catalyze protein synthesis and consist of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit, composed of four RNA species and about 80 distinct proteins. This gene encodes a cytoplasmic ribosomal protein that is part of the 40S subunit and belongs to the S6E family. It is the major substrate of ribosomal protein kinases, with phosphorylation occurring on five C-terminal serine residues. Phosphorylation is induced by growth factors, tumor-promoting agents, and mitogens, while dephosphorylation occurs at growth arrest. The protein may regulate cell growth and proliferation by selectively translating specific mRNA classes. As typical for ribosomal protein genes, multiple processed pseudogenes exist.
