Background
Cytoplasmic ribosomes, which catalyze protein synthesis, consist of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit. These subunits are composed of 4 RNA species and approximately 80 distinct proteins. RPS4Y1 encodes ribosomal protein S4, a component of the 40S subunit. This protein is unique in being encoded by more than one gene—RPS4Y1 and RPS4X. Although the isoforms differ, they are functionally equivalent. Ribosomal protein S4 belongs to the S4E family and has been implicated in Turner syndrome, though this hypothesis remains controversial. Multiple processed pseudogenes of this gene are dispersed throughout the genome.
