Background
Ribosomes are organelles responsible for catalyzing protein synthesis and consist of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit. These subunits comprise four RNA species and approximately 80 structurally distinct proteins. The RPS2 gene encodes a component of the 40S subunit and belongs to the S5P family of ribosomal proteins. It is localized in the cytoplasm and shares sequence similarity with mouse LLRep3. The gene is co-transcribed with small nucleolar RNA gene U64 located in its third intron. Multiple processed pseudogenes of this gene are dispersed throughout the genome. (RefSeq, Jul 2008)
