Background
Ribosomes are organelles that catalyze protein synthesis, consisting of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit. These subunits are composed of 4 RNA species and about 80 structurally distinct proteins. The RPS12 gene encodes a ribosomal protein that is part of the 40S subunit and belongs to the S12E family. It is localized in the cytoplasm. Increased expression of this gene has been observed in colorectal cancers compared to normal colonic mucosa. As typical for ribosomal protein genes, multiple processed pseudogenes are dispersed throughout the genome. (RefSeq, Jul 2008)
