Background

Ribosomes are organelles responsible for catalyzing protein synthesis, consisting of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit. These subunits are composed of four RNA species and approximately 80 distinct proteins. The RPL7 gene encodes a ribosomal protein that is part of the 60S subunit and belongs to the L30P family.
The protein contains an N-terminal basic region-leucine zipper (BZIP)-like domain and an RNP consensus submotif (RNP2). In vitro, the BZIP-like domain mediates homodimerization and stable binding to DNA and RNA, showing preference for 28S rRNA and mRNA.
RPL7 can inhibit cell-free translation of mRNAs, suggesting a regulatory role in the translation process. It is located primarily in the cytoplasm and has been identified as an autoantigen in systemic autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus.
