Background
Ribosomes are organelles that catalyze protein synthesis, consisting of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit. These subunits are composed of 4 RNA species and about 80 distinct proteins. RPL39 encodes a component of the 60S subunit and belongs to the S39E family of ribosomal proteins. It is located in the cytoplasm and is one of the smallest and most basic ribosomal proteins in rat. The gene is co-transcribed with the U69 small nucleolar RNA gene located in its second intron. As typical for ribosomal protein genes, multiple processed pseudogenes are dispersed throughout the genome. (RefSeq, Jul 2008)
