Background
Ribosomes are organelles responsible for catalyzing protein synthesis, consisting of a small 40S and a large 60S subunit. These subunits are composed of 4 RNA species and approximately 80 distinct proteins. The RPL36 gene encodes one of the proteins of the 60S subunit and belongs to the L36E family. It is located in the cytoplasm, and transcript variants from alternative splicing encode the same protein. Multiple processed pseudogenes of this gene exist throughout the genome.
