Background
Ribosomes are complexes that catalyze protein synthesis, consisting of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit. These subunits contain four RNA species and approximately 80 distinct proteins. The RPL3 gene encodes a component of the 60S subunit belonging to the L3P family, mainly localized in the cytoplasm. RPL3 can bind to HIV-1 TAR mRNA and may contribute to tat-mediated transactivation. The gene is co-transcribed with several small nucleolar RNA genes within its introns. Multiple processed pseudogenes of RPL3 are dispersed throughout the genome.
