Background

Ribosomes are organelles that catalyze protein synthesis, consisting of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit. These subunits include 4 RNA species and approximately 80 structurally distinct proteins. RPL28 encodes a component of the 60S subunit and belongs to the L28E family of ribosomal proteins. It is located in the cytoplasm. Variable expression has been observed in colorectal cancers compared to adjacent normal tissues, though no correlation with disease severity was found. Multiple processed pseudogenes of this gene are dispersed throughout the genome. Alternative splicing produces multiple transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms. (RefSeq, Oct 2008)
