Background

Ribosomes are organelles that catalyze protein synthesis and consist of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit. These subunits are composed of four RNA species and approximately 80 structurally distinct proteins. The RPL12 gene encodes a ribosomal protein that is a component of the 60S subunit and belongs to the L11P family. The protein is located in the cytoplasm and binds directly to 26S rRNA. This gene is co-transcribed with the U65 snoRNA, located in its fourth intron. Multiple processed pseudogenes of this gene are dispersed throughout the genome.
