Background

The 26S proteasome is a multicatalytic proteinase complex with a highly ordered structure composed of two complexes — a 20S core and a 19S regulator.
The 20S core consists of four rings of 28 non-identical subunits: two rings of seven alpha subunits and two rings of seven beta subunits.
The 19S regulator includes a base with six ATPase subunits and two non-ATPase subunits, and a lid containing up to ten non-ATPase subunits.
Proteasomes are widely distributed in eukaryotic cells and cleave peptides in an ATP/ubiquitin-dependent, non-lysosomal pathway.
A modified version, the immunoproteasome, plays a key role in processing class I MHC peptides.
This gene encodes a non-ATPase subunit of the 19S regulator. A pseudogene has been identified on chromosome 3. Alternatively spliced transcript variants are known.
