Background
Proteasome 26S subunit, ATPase 6 (PSMC6) is a component of the 26S proteasome complex, a multicatalytic proteinase complex with a highly ordered structure composed of a 20S core and a 19S regulator.
The 20S core consists of four rings of 28 non-identical subunits (two α and two β rings). The 19S regulator includes a base (six ATPase and two non-ATPase subunits) and a lid (up to ten non-ATPase subunits).
Proteasomes are abundant in eukaryotic cells and cleave peptides in an ATP/ubiquitin-dependent, non-lysosomal pathway. The immunoproteasome, a modified form, plays an essential role in processing class I MHC peptides.
PSMC6 encodes one of the ATPase subunits belonging to the AAA family, which possesses chaperone-like activity. Pseudogenes have been identified on chromosomes.
