Background
This gene encodes a member of the PIAS (protein inhibitor of activated STAT) family of transcriptional modulators. The protein functions as a SUMO (small ubiquitin-like modifier)-E3 ligase, catalyzing the covalent attachment of SUMO proteins to specific targets. It interacts directly with several transcription factors, modulating their activity positively or negatively. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants have been identified, though some full-length forms remain undetermined. (RefSeq, Jul 2008)
