Background
This gene encodes a cell surface tyrosine kinase receptor for members of the platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) family. These growth factors act as mitogens for cells of mesenchymal origin. The receptor’s ligand-binding identity determines whether it forms a homodimer or heterodimer with PDGFR-α or PDGFR-β polypeptides. The gene is located on chromosome 5 near GM-CSF and M-CSF receptor genes, potentially linked to the 5q syndrome. A translocation between chromosomes 5 and 12 that fuses this gene with the ETV6 leukemia gene results in chronic myeloproliferative disorder with eosinophilia (RefSeq, Jul 2008).
