Target Information
TNF alpha is a multifunctional proinflammatory cytokine belonging to the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) superfamily. It is mainly secreted by macrophages and binds to receptors TNFRSF1A/TNFR1 and TNFRSF1B/TNFBR. TNF alpha regulates immune cells, cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, lipid metabolism, and coagulation. It exists as multimers but appears as a single 17 kDa band on SDS-PAGE under non-reducing conditions. Knockout studies in mice suggest neuroprotective roles, and TNF alpha induces tumor necrosis in tumor-bearing mice. It plays a key role in immune responses to various infections and is implicated in autoimmune diseases, insulin resistance, and cancer.
