Target Information
The family of voltage-dependent chloride channels (CLCs) regulate cellular trafficking of chloride ions, which are critical for all living cells. CLCs control excitability in muscle and nerve cells, aid in solute transport, and maintain cellular volume.
Genes encoding human CLC-1 through CLC-7 are located on chromosomes 7, 3q26, 4q32, Xp22, Xp11, 1p36, and 16p13, respectively.
- CLC-1: Highly expressed in skeletal muscle; mutations cause myotonia.
- CLC-2: Expressed in epithelial tissues, potential target for cystic fibrosis therapy.
- CLC-3: Abundant in neuronal tissue.
- CLC-4: Expressed in skeletal and cardiac muscle as well as brain.
