Target Information
Microtubules are intracellular dynamic polymers composed of evolutionarily conserved alpha/beta-tubulin heterodimers and microtubule-associated proteins (MAPs). They exhibit intrinsic polarity with dynamic plus ends and less dynamic minus ends and are essential for processes such as mitosis, meiosis, maintenance of cell shape, and intracellular transport. Microtubules also enable cell movement via flagella and cilia. In mammalian cells, microtubules have their minus ends anchored in microtubule organizing centers (MTOCs). The GTP molecule is vital for tubulin heterodimer association and microtubule formation. Microtubule polymerization is reversible, displaying dynamic instability. Alpha-tubulin (~50 kDa) is a globular protein existing as soluble alpha/beta-tubulin dimers or polymerized microtubules. In humans, six tubulin genes code for various tubulin classes.
