Target Information

This gene is a member of the natriuretic peptide family and encodes a secreted protein functioning as a cardiac hormone. The protein undergoes two cleavage events—one intracellular and one extracellular after secretion into the blood. Its biological actions include:

  • Natriuresis
  • Diuresis
  • Vasorelaxation
  • Inhibition of renin and aldosterone secretion
    It plays a key role in cardiovascular homeostasis. Elevated levels in the bloodstream indicate heart failure. Mutations are associated with postmenopausal osteoporosis.
