Target Information

Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and contribute to protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein and 25% rRNA composition—opposite to prokaryotic ribosomes. Prokaryotic ribosomes contain a 5S rRNA, which mammalian mitoribosomes lack. The mitoribosomal proteins vary significantly among species, complicating recognition by sequence homology.
MRPL36 encodes a protein of the 39S subunit, and a pseudogene corresponding to this gene is found on chromosome 2p.
