Target Information
HOXD9 is a sequence-specific transcription factor that plays a role in developmental regulation, providing cells with positional identities along the anterior-posterior axis. It belongs to the homeobox gene family, which encodes conserved transcription factors crucial for morphogenesis in multicellular organisms. Mammals have four homeobox gene clusters (HOXA, HOXB, HOXC, HOXD), each located on different chromosomes and containing 9–11 tandemly arranged genes. The HOXD9 gene is located in the 2q31–2q37 region. Deletions affecting this cluster are associated with severe limb and genital abnormalities. The precise role of HOXD9 remains under study.
