Target Information
ASCL1 (also known as ASH1) is a basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor essential for early nervous system development. It is expressed in fetal brain and is crucial for the development and survival of autonomic neurons. ASCL1 interacts with MEF-2A to regulate gene expression involved in neuronal circuit formation within the central nervous system. High ASCL1 expression is observed in neuroendocrine tumors, such as medullary thyroid cancer and small cell lung cancer, making it a useful marker for cancers with neuroendocrine features. The ASCL1 gene maps to human chromosome 12 and contains a trinucleotide repeat region, potentially linked to inherited diseases.
