Target Information
Eukaryotes produce three distinct classes of RNA polymerase: Pol I, II, and III.
Each polymerase synthesizes a different class of RNA.
- Pol I: Transcribes rRNA genes for the precursor of 28S, 18S, and 5.8S ribosomal RNA molecules.
- Pol II: Transcribes protein-encoding genes into mRNA and snRNA genes into snRNAs that influence RNA processing.
- Pol III: Transcribes 5S rRNA and all tRNA genes.
Each RNA polymerase complex consists of 9–15 different polypeptides. The RPB6 and RPB8 subunits are shared by all three RNA polymerases.
