Target Information
Signal transduction of TGF-beta superfamily members is regulated by Smad proteins. Smad4 plays an essential role in TGF-beta-induced transcriptional activation, mediating the association of phosphorylated receptor-associated Smads. SMIF (Smad4-interacting protein) and Smad4 form a complex with TGF-beta and BMP4, facilitating nuclear translocation. Deletion of the Smad4-interacting domain in SMIF eliminates TGF-beta-induced nuclear translocation. The human SMIF gene is ubiquitously expressed and encodes a 70 kDa protein.
