Phenol Red Sodium Salt

Phenol red is a pH indicator that shows a gradual color change from yellow to red over a pH range of 6.8 to 8.2. It is widely used in cell culture media to monitor pH changes.
Living tissues thrive in a near-neutral pH environment; therefore, maintaining the medium close to neutrality is essential.
Under normal conditions, the addition of phenol red imparts a pink-red color to the medium. When waste products accumulate or cells die, the resulting pH change alters the indicator color.
Upon acidification, the medium turns yellow, indicating the need to replace the medium or the possibility of bacterial contamination.
