Target Information

CD83 cell surface antigen is a 40–45 kDa glycoprotein expressed by peripheral blood dendritic cells. Peripheral lymphocytes can be induced to express low levels of CD83 after culture with agents such as Con A or PHA.
In immunohistology, CD83 is strongly expressed by interfollicular interdigitating reticulum cells and weakly by cells within germinal centers. It is also expressed by Langerhans cells in the skin.

The CD83 antigen is a 186-amino-acid single-chain glycoprotein and a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily, composed of an extracellular V-type Ig-like domain, a transmembrane region, and a short cytoplasmic tail (~40 amino acids).
CD83 undergoes extensive post-translational glycosylation, resulting in a molecular weight approximately twice that of its core protein.

CD83⁺ cells have a unique surface phenotype distinct from T, B, NK, or myelomonocytic cells. They co-express high levels of MHC class II molecules and markers from multiple lineages (e.g., CD2, CD5, CD40, CD78, CD13, CD33, CD36).
Diseases associated with CD83 dysfunction include plague and Rift Valley fever.
