Target Information
Nanos is a zinc-finger containing, RNA-binding protein implicated in germ cell development in both invertebrates and vertebrates. In Drosophila, Nanos represses apoptosis during development to ensure proper germ-line formation. In mammals, Nanos2 and Nanos3 are essential for germ cell development, while Nanos1 expression is dispensable.
- Nanos2-deficient primordial germ cells (PGCs) die only in male gonads.
- Nanos3-deficient PGCs are lost during migration regardless of sex.
Distinct expression patterns of Nanos2 and Nanos3 suggest non-redundant functions, though Nanos2 expression can partially compensate for Nanos3 deficiency. Nanos3 expression cannot rescue Nanos2-deficient defects.
