Target Information
Kallikreins are a subgroup of serine proteases with diverse physiological functions. Many kallikreins are implicated in carcinogenesis and may serve as potential biomarkers for cancer and other diseases.
This gene, part of the kallikrein subfamily cluster on chromosome 19, encodes an enzyme involved in the proteolysis of intercellular cohesive structures preceding desquamation (shedding of the outermost epidermal layer).
Alternative splicing results in two transcript variants encoding the same protein.
