Target Information
This gene encodes a type II transmembrane glycoprotein belonging to the M28 peptidase family. The protein acts as a glutamate carboxypeptidase on various substrates, including folate and the neuropeptide N-acetyl-L-aspartyl-L-glutamate. It is expressed in multiple tissues such as the prostate, central and peripheral nervous systems, and kidney.
A mutation in this gene may be associated with impaired intestinal absorption of folates, leading to low blood folate levels and hyperhomocysteinemia. In the brain, expression may be linked to conditions involving glutamate excitotoxicity. In the prostate, the protein is up-regulated in cancerous cells and serves as a diagnostic and prognostic marker for prostate cancer. The gene likely arose from a duplication event, and alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms.
